Why do we stand up?
We stand up out of respect, showing we know that something is important.
We stand up in honor of people, like when a judge or president walks into the room. We stand in honor of ideas, like those expressed in a national anthem or those that are central to our religion. For instance, when the Torah is picked up, we stand up. When the set of blessings known as Amidah (the "standing" prayer) is recited, we stand up. But we also stand up in support of important issues: Stand up against bullying! Stand up against poverty! Stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves! While the words of our Hebrew prayers touch us spiritually, they also challenge us to be God's partner in the world. When you are involved in Jewish worship, you can find ways to say, "I'm gonna stand up!" And when you accept these challenges, you are praying with your feet. So STAND UP! |
How do we stand up?
It's pretty easy to get started. There are eight "regular" Stand Up challenges, and every now and then we may throw in a Special Challenge!
